Today we started from Wilmington (North Carolina) into a very rainy day … But after driving a few miles, the sky cleared, and besides a few clouds, during the day it was always sunny. Your sun arrived Patti – a big thank you to you! 🙂 *happy* Always following along the east coast we went south to Charleston (South Carolina). About 10 miles off Charleston you find „Boone Hall Plantation“ at Mount Pleasant. The „Boone Hall Plantation“ was built in 1681 and was once a gift of the acquis to Major Boone, one of the first settlers to „Charles Town“ – also known as today’s „Charleston“. The entrance to the plantation (built in 1743) is lined with beautiful oak trees. On this premises scenes from the movies „North and South“ and „Gone With the Wind“ were filmed. The original main house was unfortunately completely destroyed by fires and storms. In 1935 this one – close ot the original mansion – was built. The first floor is open to the public – the upper floors are privat. Boone Hall Plantation is still an active plantation. Until the beginning of the 20th Century they mainly grow cotton here. Today, there have pecans. The so-called slave-street, consisting of well-preserved brick buildings, is also a „must-see“. Here the slaves lived according the hierarchy of better-off artisans and domestic workers. The homes of the field workers were much more modest and further out. From „Boone Hall Plantation“ we drove further south to Charleston. Just about a mile away from the plantation we saw „Mount Pleasant Memorial Garden“ – The singer Melanie Thornton grew up in Mount Pleasant. She died on the return flight from a concert in a plane crash on 11-24-2001 in Switzerland, and was buried here in the Memorial Garden. We found her grave… nex to her grave we also found a tombstone with the same last name and a birth date of 1927. We assume this must be her grandfather. Then we went to the city „Charleston“ with all their charming palm-occupied houses and streets for sight-seeing. The dance named Charlston which was trendy in the 1920´s was named after this city. Next? We went to uncle Heinz and aunt Maren. Heike met them for the first time, and felt immediately at home. Tom was here about 3 years ago, and so they had to talk about a lot. That´s the reason for being late with our report today. But no matter – here it is now, with lots of beautiful pictures. Enjoy watching them, and see you tomorrow! Dear greeting to all our readers, Tom and Heike 🙂
