Nachdem wir uns heute morgen wirklich schweren Herzens von unserem schnuffigen Holzhüttchen in Cody verabschiedet hatten, setzten wir unsere Sightseeing- Tour fort in Richtung Osten. Unser erstes Etappenziel heute : Der „Devils Tower“ (Teufels – Turm).

Leaving this morning the really nice log-house motel in Cody, we continued our sightseeing tour to the east. Our first milestone today: „Devils Tower Monument“. Devils Tower is a monolith located at the edge of the Bear Lodge Mountains and the Black Hills (Wyoming). It has a height of about 1,267 feet and a diameter of almost 490 feet. The mountain is for several people of the Plains Indians a sacred place. Devils Tower is a volcano whose magma cooled slowly after emerging, with the result of the crystalline rocks of crack regular columns. About 50 miles further east, we went the state of South Dakota, where we first stopped at Mount Rushmore monument. This monument is a memorial portrait of the heads of the four (up to the time of its creation) most important and emblematic U.S. – presidents. Each portrait is 60 feet high. Shown from left to right, President George Washington (1st. U.S. president), Thomas Jefferson (3rd.), Theodore Roosevelt (26nd.) and Abraham Lincoln (16th). The builder was John Gutzon de la Mothe Borglum. Together with 400 workers, he began in 1927 till 1941 with the work. Borglum died shortly before completion, his son than has completed the work. The Lakota – Indians see the monument as a desecration of their sacred mountain … just as critical are facing many Indians another monument: the „Crazy Horse Memorial.“ It is located about 14 miles southwest of Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills and was created in honor of the Oglala Lakota Indian’s „Crazy Horse“. Like Mount Rushmore Monument it is carved in stone, but is many times greater. In early 1948 they began with the first explosions – about 10 million tons of granite were blasted away ever since. Unfortunately – due to financial reasons (this Memorial receives no government funding) – the work stopped in 1998. At this time only the face was completed. Another 100 years are estimated in order to complete the work. The entrance sign shows how the memorial should look like in a finished state. After so much history and historical traces, we are completly done for the day, and the only thing we want to do now is having a little time to relax a bit … 🙂 Tomorrow we continue our tour – first stop at a ghost town. Well, hopefully we get out of this place without trouble! That´s it for the moment, diligent readers … We are pleased you follow our diary so much and hope you do so for the following last 2 weeks. Love from Tom and Heike 🙂
